UCSB Campus Point - Junior Lifeguards offers children ages 8-17 the opportunity to learn and train with professional lifeguards.
Jr Lifeguards is more than just a summer camp, participants will gain a wide variety of skills, knowledge and valuable experience which builds self-confidence and skills for life.
Program topics include oceanography, first aid, CPR, water rescue techniques, mutual cooperation, competition techniques, and lifesaving methods.
Our Instructors are a mix of local teachers and college students with many years of lifeguarding experience and jr guard program participation. Program staff provide a fun and safe aquatic education to UCSB JG participants.

Tryouts consists of:
Simply show up at the UCSB Recreation Center on tryout dates to participate in tryouts.
- Treading Water for 3 minutes
- Swimming underwater for 10 yards
- Swimming 100 yards under time limit
(Ages 12 and up=2:20, Ages 11 and under=2:30)
Tryouts will be administered on a first-come first-served basis.
April 29th 9:00am
This requires all applicants to be at the Rec Cen pool at 9am.
Assistant positions are open to past Jr Guard program participants only.
Raging Waters Trip
Online registration is NOT available for this activity.
Go to the Rec Cen Cashier's Office to pay or see Buzz.
If you are a new participant, DO NOT mail in payment before attending a tryout.
The mail in application located in the 'downloads' section is for returning participants who do not wish to use online registration and for new participants to bring to tryouts.
- $365 per 4-week session
- $585 for both sessions
Assistants and "added siblings" may apply for a 10% discount .
Assistants may receive substantial tuition reduction if selected.
Scholarship availability is pending.
SAFETY IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY!! Instructors receive Red Cross lifeguard training and USLA Open Water training. Some are EMT certified and possess California Teaching Credentials.
Student-Instructor ratio is 20:1.
Curriculum: CPR, AED training, First Aid, Smooth and Open Water Lifesaving, and Marine Resource Stewardship. Please see curriculum at Downloads link for more.
Fun: surfing, body boarding, water polo, kayaking, volleyball, swimming, beach games, and special events.
